The EU guarantee notice and durability label

Since , shops that sell goods to EU consumers show a standard EU notice about the two-year legal guarantee. Where a producer offers a free durability guarantee of more than two years, the shop also shows a standard label. Here is what that means for your product pages and checkout.

This guide is technical help to understand the rules, not legal advice. Check the official source for your situation, or ask a lawyer when you are unsure.

The legal guarantee notice

Directive (EU) 2024/825 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 created a harmonised notice that tells customers about their legal guarantee of conformity: at least two years, free repair or replacement, and in some cases a price reduction or a refund. Every trader that sells goods to consumers has to show it prominently.

  • Use the official artwork in the customer's language. It is in colour and may not be edited.
  • Show it before the customer is bound by the order, for example on product pages or in the checkout.

The durability label

The label is only needed where the producer offers a commercial guarantee of durability that covers the whole product for more than two years at no extra cost, and tells you about it. The label shows the number of years and the producer. In a shop it can sit behind a smaller nested display, and it has to appear before the order button.

Only three fields of the label may be filled in: the number of years, the producer's name or trademark, and the model.

More new information since the same date

The same directive adds pre-contract information where it exists: environmentally friendly delivery options, how long the producer provides software updates, and the repairability score or information about spare parts and repair.

Separately, the Right to Repair Directive (EU) 2024/1799 applies from : when a customer chooses repair under the legal guarantee, the guarantee period is extended once by 12 months.

Common mistakes

  • Retyping the notice as text, or changing its colours or layout. The artwork has to stay as published.
  • Showing the notice only in the terms and conditions, where customers rarely see it before they order.
  • Showing the durability label for products without such a guarantee from the producer.
  • Mixing up the legal guarantee with the shop's own voluntary warranty.

How Shopproof helps

The free Shopproof app for Shopify and plugin for WooCommerce show the official notice in the customer's language, and the durability label with the years and producer you enter, on product pages and before the order button. The Shopify app and the WooCommerce plugin are in store review now, and the list below gets an email on launch day. The Shopware plugin can be downloaded today.
